What are dad sandals?
Dad sandals are chunky sandal that often features velcro straps and have a minimalistic color palette. They’re the kind of shoes that your dad would have worn on vacation in the ‘90s or early 2000s. Just like ugly and chunky sneakers, these sandals have become one of the ‘it’ shoes of the year.
The beauty of dad sandals is that they work with everything, just like your favorite sneakers. They’re the summer alternative to sneakers and work with all your staple outfits, whether you live in dresses or athleisure.
They’ve become popular as fashion trends put comfort first. If you’re a fan of Birkenstock sandals, you’ll fall head over heels for dad sandals. These shoes are the perfect alternative to wearing heeled sandals or espadrilles if you want a comfortable and on-trend look that your favorite influencers are already rocking.
The luxury brands jumping on the trend
Dad sandals reached a new level of popularity when Chanel came out with their take on the chunky sandals, complete with interlocking CC detailing. These shoes are impossible to get your hands on, selling out every time they’re restocked. Once the Chanel version hit the market, other brands were quick to jump on the trend – sending the price of dad sandals through the roof. Reselling websites such as Vestaire Collection and TheRealReal sell Chanel dad sandals.
Hermes has released their own take on the dad sandal, giving them a more minimalistic but edgier look. They’re lowkey and timeless, making them a great investment if you want to make a splurge purchase. Hermes has taken their OG sandals – the celebrity-approved Orans -and turned them into a chunkier dad sandal with a strap.
Other designer brands with dad sandals include Prada, who gave the shoe a contemporary feel with a chunky ridged rubber sole for a practical and stylish look. These sandals have a ‘young’ look that still encapsulates the aesthetic of the dad sandals.
